Monopoly Annecy
A stunningly successful edition of the world's biggest board game for the 'Venice of the Alps'
In November 2025, the world’s most famous board game arrived in Annecy as a beautifully adapted special edition the classic Monopoly board game. The result is a game that reflects Annecy's completely unique identity, heritage, and everyday life.
Developed by Alpine Editions in collaboration with the Office de Tourisme du Lac d’Annecy and Winning Moves France, Monopoly Annecy transforms the familiar Monopoly board into a journey through one of France’s most beloved towns. From the dreamy canals of the old town to the shores of sparkling Lake Annecy and the surrounding Alpine mountain vista, this special edition of Monopoly captures what makes Annecy instantly recognisable and deeply loved.

This project was a collaborative initiative bringing together local institutions, businesses, creatives, and residents, all contributing to a shared vision: a game that must represent Annecy authentically, playfully while being able to deliver value for years and decades to come.
The Launch of Monopoly Annecy
Monopoly Annecy was officially launched during 20–22 November 2025, with a public celebration held at the Nouvelles Galeries shopping centre in the heart of Annecy.
To mark the occasion, the venue was adapted to include a Monopoly-themed experience. Visitors could play the brand new Monopoly Annecy game using a giant walkable Monopoly board, oversized game pieces and cards, with Mr. Monopoly making special appearances throughout the weekend.

The launch quickly became a shared community moment. Families, residents, and visitors stopped to play, explore the board, and see how Annecy had been translated into Monopoly game format. Local media covered the event extensively, and demand was immediate, with many copies reserved or purchased during the launch weekend itself.
A game shaped by its city
One of the defining strengths of Monopoly Annecy lies in the way it reflects the town itself.
The board, cards, and spaces feature many of Annecy’s most iconic locations — including the Palais de l’Île, Pont des Amours, Château d’Annecy, the lakeside, and the old town as well as a selection of local businesses that form part of everyday life in the city.
The Office de Tourisme du Lac d’Annecy supported the project to help ensure the edition captured the town’s cultural and geographic identity in a meaningful way. Local contributors also played an important role. Photographer Julien Audigier, whose work celebrates Annecy’s landscapes and atmosphere, contributed the photograph used on the box lix, gameboard montage and selected board squares.
Together, these contributions ensured that Monopoly Annecy feels recognisable, personal, and a portrait of the city as experienced by those who know it best.
Reception and legacy
Following its release, Monopoly Annecy quickly established itself as a local success. Early production runs sold rapidly, and the game was embraced both by residents and by visitors looking for a distinctive and meaningful souvenir of their time in Annecy.
Today, Monopoly Annecy is enjoyed as:
-
A family favourite for relaxed game nights
-
A collector’s item for Monopoly enthusiasts
-
A gift that captures the spirit of Annecy
-
A lasting reminder of the town’s unique blend of history, nature, and lifestyle
The success of Monopoly Annecy demonstrates how a globally recognised game can be used to celebrate local identity in a way that is playful, inclusive, and enduring.
